The year is 1985, when 17-year-old high school student Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) stops in front of Dr. Emmett Brown's laboratory (Christopher Lloyd), who most of his fellow citizens consider a bit crazy. Marty receives a message from the doctor asking him to help him with his latest invention - time machine, made from a DeLorean sports car (DeLorean), which can travel through time when it reaches speeds of 88 miles per hour.
Suddenly, however, the doctor is shot by Libyan nationalists, and Marty attempts to escape them using the time machine. Unexpectedly, Marty finds himself in 1955, where he meets his parents when they were still teenagers and inadvertently interferes with their first meeting. Marty later finds a young version of Dr. Emmett, with whom he seeks a way to reunite Marty's parents and return him to the future in 1985.
